About Cinebar Star Ranch

It started as a dream, slowly became a reality, and has become a delightful obsession! We don't remember exactly when we met our first alpaca, but we do remember the event itself - we were enchanted by this quiet, gentle, and oh-so-soft creature. Several years went by, and every so often we'd think about alpacas until, finally, we decided to start educating ourselves about alpacas and about the business of raising alpacas. Our first step was to attend the International Alpaca Oddyssey in 2001. What an experience! We found the people involved in the business of raising alpacas were very friendly and willing to help newcomers to the industry, or to just answer questions from the curious. We attended seminars about how to care for alpacas, how to evaluate the fiber and the animals prior to purchase, the business and financial aspects of raising alpacas, and just about everything else we could want to know about alpacas. But the most overwhelming thing was just being able to see, hear, and touch so many of these wonderful creatures all in one place!

Next, we visited a number of alpaca ranches, asked a million questions, and touched a lot of alpacas. Many an enjoyable day was spent traveling from ranch to ranch, and every stop was a wealth of information. On every ranch we'd learn a little bit more about alpacas, as well as helpful tips for taking care of them. We found that everyone had their own way of doing things, and that there isn't a right way to raise alpacas, there are MANY right ways. For every person in the business there is a story about how and why they started raising alpacas, but they all had one thing in common - they were all enthusiastic about alpacas and the business prospects of raising them.

Finally, after soaking up enough information and evaluating the feasibility of alpacas as a business, it was time to take the plunge. We bought our first alpacas in the spring of 2001, and we've never regretted it. We love the lifestyle, the animals, the people we've met, and the mounds of wonderful, soft fiber we get every spring at shearing time. Since we purchased the alpacas, we've branched out a bit into other aspects of the alpaca business. In the spring of 2004 we moved from Brentwood, CA to a ranch near Cinebar, WA, and we've opened a yarn shop on our ranch where we sell our alpaca fiber, handspun alpaca yarn, hand knit and hand woven garments, as well as a full line of commercial yarn and fiber products. We enjoy all aspects of the industry from the pasture to the clothing rack. In the parlance of the business world, I guess that makes us a "vertically integrated" business. To put it in our own terms: We're havin' a ball...
